“We can now prevent our children from dying from malnutrition.”
These powerful words from a caregiver reflect the transformative impact of community-based nutrition interventions implemented by Life At Best Development Initiative (LABDI).
For many families in vulnerable communities, malnutrition remains a silent threat that often goes unnoticed until a child’s condition becomes severe. Limited awareness of the warning signs and delayed access to treatment can place children at significant risk, leading to preventable illness and, in some cases, death.
Today, that reality is changing.

Through targeted nutrition awareness sessions and practical demonstrations, LABDI is equipping caregivers with the knowledge and tools they need to identify malnutrition early and seek timely support for their children. Caregivers are being trained to recognize key signs of malnutrition and use Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tapes to monitor their children’s nutritional status within their own communities.
What was once a challenge reserved for health facilities is now becoming a community-led effort. Mothers and caregivers are gaining the confidence to regularly assess their children, identify potential cases early, and take prompt action before a child’s condition worsens.
Beyond improving detection, these interventions are fostering a culture of prevention. Caregivers are learning essential nutrition practices, appropriate infant and young child feeding methods, and the importance of timely referrals and treatment. As a result, families are becoming better equipped to protect their children from the devastating effects of malnutrition.

The impact extends far beyond individual households. As caregivers share their knowledge with neighbours, friends, and other family members, communities are becoming more aware, more informed, and more resilient in addressing nutrition challenges. Every trained caregiver represents another line of defence against child malnutrition and another opportunity to save lives.
The statement, “We can now prevent our children from dying from malnutrition,” is more than a testimony—it is evidence that empowering communities with knowledge can be one of the most effective tools in the fight against malnutrition.

At LABDI, we remain committed to ensuring that vulnerable children have the opportunity to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential. By strengthening caregivers’ capacity to detect malnutrition early and respond appropriately, we are helping to create healthier families and stronger communities.
This remarkable achievement has been made possible through the generous support of the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF). Their continued commitment to improving nutrition outcomes is helping save lives, strengthen community resilience, and give countless children the chance of a healthier future.
