“I will be able to train others in my community with my newly acquired skill,” says Yahaya with confidence and optimism.

For Yahaya, vocational skills training represents far more than an opportunity to earn a living. It is a pathway to independence, dignity, and community transformation. Having acquired practical skills through LABDI’s livelihood support programme, he now envisions a future where he can not only support himself and his family but also empower others by sharing his knowledge and experience.

Yahaya’s story reflects the aspirations of many young people in Bama Local Government Area who are eager to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to their communities despite years of economic hardship and limited opportunities.

Today, a beam of hope is shining brighter across Bama.

Over the past six months, Life At Best Development Initiative (LABDI), through its livelihood and resilience-building interventions, has successfully trained 111 young people (86 girls and 25 boys) and 50 women—in a variety of marketable vocational skills. The training covered tailoring, barbing, aluminium fabrication, carpentry, and welding, providing participants with practical competencies that can help them establish sustainable sources of income.

Recognizing the critical role caregivers play in household well-being, the programme also provided livelihood training to 50 caregivers in tailoring and baking. Facilitated by experienced master trainers, these sessions equipped participants with valuable entrepreneurial and technical skills that can help improve household incomes and strengthen family resilience.

Beyond the numbers, the programme is changing lives.

Young people who previously faced uncertainty are now gaining confidence in their ability to earn a living and contribute positively to society. Caregivers who once struggled to provide for their families are learning skills that can help them generate income and meet essential household needs. As beneficiaries begin to apply their new knowledge, they are becoming agents of change within their communities, creating opportunities for others and fostering a culture of self-reliance.

The impact extends beyond individual households. By equipping community members with practical and market-driven skills, the initiative is helping to reduce vulnerability, strengthen local economies, and build resilience against future shocks. Beneficiaries like Yahaya are already planning to transfer their skills to others, ensuring that the benefits of the programme continue to multiply long after the training has ended.

At LABDI, we believe that sustainable development begins with empowering people to unlock their potential. Through targeted livelihood interventions, we are helping vulnerable populations move from dependency to self-sufficiency, enabling them to build brighter and more secure futures for themselves and their families.

This achievement would not have been possible without the invaluable support and partnership of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and our implementing partner, Youth Integrated for Positive Development Initiative (YIPDI). Their unwavering commitment to improving lives, strengthening community resilience, and expanding economic opportunities continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals and families across Bama.

Together, we are not only teaching skills—we are restoring hope, creating opportunities, and building stronger, more resilient communities for generations to come.
